After delivery, the most common question new moms ask is, “How can I lose weight?”. Most new moms are also too sleep deprived and exhausted and just thinking about doing an exercise is next to impossible.
For me, although I had a vaginal birth, I had to wait almost 2 months before I can do any activity besides walking because I had a repaired third laceration. I didn’t want to do anything that would cause for the incision to dehisced. The last thing I want was to come back for surgical repair which thankfully did not happen. I took my time and let it completely heal.
The pace depends on you and your situation. Most women are ready to exercise after 6 weeks, where some women may be ready a few days after giving birth. If you didn’t have any complications after giving birth then you can start to exercise when you feel ready or when your doctor gives you a green signal when you can start.
Basically, you need to do two things. One is to do regular exercises and the second is eat healthy food. You can start with Kegel exercises which does not require any special clothing or equipment. This exercise strengthen your pelvic floor muscle. You have to contract as if you are stopping your urine stream or you can tighten your rectum as if you are trying to stop gas. Do this for at least 5 seconds each kegel and at least 10 times a day. With food, less sweet and watch your carbs intake but at the same time make sure you meet your recommended calorie intake.
After giving birth, I was wearing size 10 and now I am back to size 4 and it took me a year to lose the extra pounds.
