Nurses appreciation week starts today May 6 and ends on May 12. This is the best time to give nurses some attention and recognition for their sacrifice and hard work. I am a nurse and I know how hard my fellow nurses work.
We have some good and bad days. Bad days sometimes comes with a grumpy, yelling or confused, combative patients. I have had crazy days at work where I had to take my lunch at 4pm and holding my bladder to attend a patient. There was one time I only voided twice during my 12 hour shift. We often forget to drink water. I probably drink less than 8 glasses of water at work which I know is not a good practice. Patient comes first and we sometimes forget how to take care of ourselves. We work on weekends and holidays. I was hoping to spend Christmas and New Year in PH last year but unfortunately I wasn’t able to. Had to sacrifice spending the most important holidays for my family. It was tough but I just have to embrace it.
“I am of certain convinced that the greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel.”
― Florence Nightingale
For me, when I hear my patients says “thank you”, it already means a lot. I don’t need a huge recognition, just this simple words make a huge difference. This profession is hard but definitely fulfilling. Happy Nurses Week to my fellow nurses!
